[iTunes Plus AAC M4A] Fink - Hard Believer (Mastered for iTunes)

Fink is the recording moniker of Fin Greenall, who started out as a DJ/producer before progressing toward making guitar-based folk/blues/indie music. Originally from Bristol, England, Greenall made his first steps in music by recording an album with Lee Jones (aka Hefner) that was eventually released under the name EVA by Kickin' Records in 1995. Billing himself as Fink, Greenall released a pair of EPs, 1997's Finkfunk and 1998's Front Side Blunt Side, on Ninja Tune's Ntune imprint before the arrival of 2001's full-length Fresh Produce. In 2006, Fink then undertook a stylistic change, deciding to pick up the guitar to create music for the acoustic-based Biscuits for Breakfast, and with the addition of Tim Thornton on drums and Guy Whittaker on bass, formed a band. Distance and Time was released in 2007 with production work from Lamb's Andy Barlow...

After many years spent wringing all the warped psychedelic magic he could out of a four-track recorder, bedroom-style, White Fence's Tim Presley moved his operation one step closer to the real world for his 2014 album, For the Recently Found Innocent. It was recorded in Ty Segall's garage studio, Segall and live bandmember Nick Murray provided drums, and the record was mixed in a real studio. The big question before hearing a single track has to be something like "Does this mean curtains for the wonderfully oddball psych pop Presley has been churning out like a mad lo-fi scientist?" The short and definitive answer is no. The Presley and Segall team is in no rush to "fix" up the sound; at best it is mid-fi, and it retains all the intimate charm of previous records. Lots of bands have picked up the shoegaze ball and run with it since the original bands flamed out in the early '90s. Not too many of them can say their guiding force spent time in prison for attempted murder or that their debut album was released by the resolutely metal label Relapse. Not too many of them ever released an album as good as Nothing have here, and 2014's Guilty of Everything is a truly impressive debut. Equally punishing and breathtaking, the album builds from singer/guitarist Domenic Palermo's undying love of My Bloody Valentine's Loveless and adds levels of toughness and power that most shoegaze bands never could quite manage. The rhythm section definitely has a past in metal, as bassist Chris Betts and drummer Kyle Kimball pummel their instruments mightily when the songs explode. They also show some nice restraint in the quiet sections...

The sound of United Waters is rock and roll submerged. The New York trio’s music is H20-logged and woozily off-speed, as if they’ve been playing in the deep end so long their notes and beats have contracted a case of the bends. The resulting effect is simultaneously close and distant. Some individual elements, like the looping guitar riffs and the machinistic drum beats, feel close enough to touch. Yet every inch of Sunburner is muffled and drenched as if it's wearing a sweater in 100-degree weather; at times, it resembles a Joy Division record played under a stack of mattresses. That sounds like a formula for a downer slog of an album, but sealing United Waters’ songs in a claustrophobic envelope makes them more engaging. On their self-titled debut album, West Coast quartet Melted Toys sound like a lot of their contemporaries. Their lo-fi, wobbly indie pop approach is one that most of the Captured Tracks roster past and present has utilized; so have many others like Real Estate and a few stragglers on Burger and other labels. Inspired by the jangling guitar interplay of '80s post-punk icons Felt, never raising their voices above a somnambulant whisper, and generally sounding like a stiff wind would blow them over, the Toys give the nearly played-out template a gentle kick by dialing it down one notch closer to dream state. In this eyes-half-shut manner, they craft a blanket fort of fragile voices, carefully plucked, strummed, and pressed guitars and keys, and a whole lot of soothingly weird and pretty songs. Liam Betson jams a lot of words into the first album under his own name and one in particular stands out: "Depression." It's a big, sticky noun, clinical, embarrassing to say, let alone sing. But he works it into the penultimate song on The Cover of Hunter, "Made From Tin", naming the illness the "guts and gore" of an allegorical body that's also tethered by anxiety and whipped by insecurity. The song, one of the record's fastest, fills the space between its shaky guitar strokes with patient breaths of clarinet. At the chorus, Betson borrows the vocal lilt Conor Oberst used on the Bright Eyes deep cut "Amy in the White Coat". "For you, the world is poorly lit," he sings, "so by nightfall, you're used to it."
