James Taylor - James Taylor: Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 (iTunes Version)
James Taylor: Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 is a hearty compilation of breezy hit songs that dotted Taylor’s career from 1968 to 1976 (sans “Mockingbird”). It opens gently with a re-recording of “Something In the Way She Moves” from his self-titled debut album (this take without the psychedelic harpsichord intro). “Carolina In My Mind,” the catchy little folk-rock number from the same album, also gets the soft rock redo to sound more like the country-rock tinged tunes from his 1970 Grammy-nominated second album, Sweet Baby James. So of course “Fire and Rain” as well as the title-track follow in their familiar warmth before Taylor's intimate coffeehouse version of Carole King’s “You’ve Got a Friend” shows up. “Walking Man” is an autumnal dad-rock number that will make you want to tuck in your shirt and wear a belt as it plays with the dusky sunset vibes of an early-‘70s movie soundtrack. Taylor’s semi-soulful take on the 1964 Motown hit “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” is another standout here with its mellow Sunday morning church-choir groove.
