Released: May 16, 2000
If nĂ¼-metal bands were movies, Deftones would be an art-house drama. “Change (In the House of Flies),” a single from their third album, White Pony, suggests the teen-murder tale River’s Edge as scripted by Franz Kafka and set to a slow-grinding pulse. Pony occasionally offers a straightforward riff ’n’ scream (“Elite”), but more often these are oblique tales of psychic pain and drugs that sometimes even touch the realm of the dreamy (“Digital Bath”). Jeff Buckley would have been thrilled at how “Knife Party” expands the hard-rock notions of his Grace — the track’s bridge finds singer Chino Moreno pulling off a worthy tribute to Buckley’s falsetto — while “Rx Queen” brings together desert twang with dub-reggae dynamics. White Pony is an object lesson in how a band can claim its own terrain, rather than giving in to imposed expectations.
