Adapted from David Nicholls' best-selling 2009 book of the same name, Lone Scherfig's romance follows Dexter (Jim Sturgess) and Emma (Anne Hathaway) over the course of 20 years, starting with the pair meeting as university students in 1988 and checking up on them every subsequent anniversary of the day they met. You'd think following two people over two decades would necessitate a time-spanning soundtrack. But despite the inclusion of artists ranging from Primal Scream to Robbie Williams to Ronan Keating, the album focuses on mid-late 1990s productions, either from one-hit wonders (Black Grape, Corona) or artists primarily tied to that decade (Fatboy Slim). Given that the film's protagonists are British, it's no surprise that much of the soundtrack comprises UK artists. While post-2000 tracks would have more thoroughly rounded out the album, many of the songs act as emotional time capsules, such as Corona's house classic "Rhythm of the Night" or Tricky's dark, moody "Aftermath." Both songs defined the 1990s in different ways -- the former emblematic of house's explosion into mainstream music, the latter helping to define now-cliché "trip-hop" that would influence countless electronic and hip-hop producers -- and showcase the diversity of the soundtrack. In addition to select tracks by noted composer Rachel Portman, the album also features a new track by nerd-rock king Elvis Costello, whose evocative "Sparking Day" stands as an album highlight.
