What do you get when you blend glittering ‘80s synth melodies with unremarkable vocals that sound like any of the myriad pop bands currently on the market? The eponymous debut from Washington DC quintet Brett. Some synth-pop records are made with the intention of making you act a fool on the dance floor and nothing else, while others can make you re-examine everything (see: Chvrches). Brett is somewhere in the middle with a jovial spirit, but with lyrics that try to transform a bedroom or a flashy nightclub into the only places that matter in the entire universe. That’s not to say these lyrics are deep; we’ve heard these songs about devoted love and carefree “put your hands in the air” anthems before. Brett possesses pomp, flash, and potential, but only half of this debut leaves an impact once the dancing’s all said and done.
