[iTunes Plus AAC M4A] Meshuggah - Koloss (iTunes Version)

A leading extreme metal group, Meshuggah shakes off its imitators to focus on doing what it does best. Which is finding the groove in the craziest of situations, turning out compositions that challenge even the most rehearsed players, and doing so with a conviction that never lets up. Punched-in-the-gut vocalist Jens Kidman growls with full-on dementia throughout, keeping casual observers away from the group and confirming its heaviness for its base. "I Am Colossus" strips the attack to its most elemental, avoiding the earlier whiplash tempo changes for a forward thrust that can't be penetrated. "The Demon's Name Is Surveillance" confirms this approach, with a grounded push that doesn't waste time with fancy niceties. Meshuggah makes fewer explorations here into what would be considered "prog metal," instead insisting on proving its superior abilities with tight performances that do more with less. Even the guitars solos strewn about are marked by a concision that makes each note matter. This is powerful stuff.
