About midway through Sea Of Approval, Andy Bull’s ‘80s synth revival desires are finally crystallised. Bouncing with jaunty lines and a relentlessly cheery chorus hook, ‘Talk Too Much’ is a pure sugar rush to the head – it’s a sonic high point in an album that is constantly pushing for one. It’s a direction that’s a little surprising for Bull, who wrote, produced and played almost all the instruments on the album himself. His previous efforts have skirted the folk rock line – the collaboration with Lisa Mitchell, ‘Dog’, relied on clean-as piano; and ‘Last Waltz’ (with Hungry Kids of Hungary), switched it up for a jolly strummed acoustic. 2010’s The Phantom Pains EP was more of the same: clean cut sounds and songwriting that was fairly straightforward, with enough twists and turns...
