Gorillaz - Gorillaz (Expanded Edition) (iTunes Version)
Damon Albarn led UK superstars Blur through a number of stylistic turns – electropop (“Girls and Boys”), Pixies-esque hollers (“Song 2”) and, of course, ’60s pastiches (much of The Great Escape). Still, the determined genre-hopping of his cartoon-fronted Gorillaz (with Dan “The Automator” Nakamura and artist Jamie Hewlett) surprised. Often building on art-funk or reggae basslines on this self-titled debut, the outfit brought together backpack rappers such as Del tha Funkee Homosapien, Buena Vista Social Club singer Ibrahim Ferrer and Albarn’s own vocals, which range from near-affectless mutterings to falsetto wails. Its twists and turns — “Clint Eastwood” is chilled-out yet discontented dub, while “M1 A1” is a one-off punk yelp — ensure that Gorillaz ultimately plays as a 21st-century pop suite.
